Immigration to North America
Immigrants
to New York City between 1 August 1855 and 18 April 1890, like
many Cereghino cousins, would have
been processed at Castle Garden, now Battery Park. From
19 April 1890 to 31 December 1891, immigrants were
processed through a place called the Old Barge Office because the Treasury
Department wanted control of
immigration and New York City, angry at this, did not permit the Treasury
Department to use Castle Garden. The
Old Barge Office was close to Castle Garden.
Ellis Island opened on 1 January 1892. It processed immigrants until
13 Jun 1897 when it burned down. From 14
Jun 1897 to 15 December 1900, immigrants were once again processed through
the Old Barge Office. On 16
December 1900 to 1924, immigrants were processed at the rebuilt Ellis Island
facility. From 1924 to 1954,
immigrants were processed on a selective basis. Although most of us
think that our relatives entered the country
through Ellis Island, you can see that many of them did not.
Who was the earliest Cereghino to come to the United States? I’m
not sure. Let us know when and where your
Cereghino ancestor entered the United States and we’ll list it on the
website. Contact

Also let us know if you have any families stories about your ancestors experience
of immigrating to the United States.
